About PHP

The Prague House of Photography (PHP) is a non-profit cultural institution specialized in the field of photography.

Founders of this non-profit organization are Capital City of Prague, the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and the civic association FotoForum Prague (originally named Prague House of Photography).

The Prague House of Photography is a highly professional institution with two open-space show-halls, a chamber show-space, a public non-lending library and study hall, a projector hall, information center and a specialized bookshop. In the future, PHP is planning a reconstruction of the basement to house a depository, modern archive, darkroom and a studio. The non-residential spaces in the second floor, mezzanine and the basement were provided to PHP by the Municipality of Prague 1.

PHP concentrates on presenting exceptional local and foreign project. The programmatic concept and dramaturgic plan are a product of cooperation with a number of outstanding Czech and foreign curators, theorists and art historians. PHP strives to guarantee quality content and genre-varied presentation of contemporary Czech and international photography and at the same time introduce both general public and professionals to great figures of classical photography and thus revive interest in the history of the medium. Nowadays, when we are flooded with visual messages of all kinds, it is very difficult to define the limits of photography. Considering this, as well as the increasing number of artists-non-photographers who use the medium of photography, PHP also focuses on various overlaps of photography into other spheres of visual arts (new media). Respect of the tradition of “pure photography” meets the free and open approach to experiment and multidisciplinary projects.

PHP’s programmatic concept includes exhibitions, educational, publishing, research, collecting and informative activities, as well as the promotion and protection of cultural heritage.
